With just weeks to go before she gives birth, Kim Kardashian has decided she’s had enough … of the paparazzi. On Thursday, the pregnant reality star took to Twitter to demand privacy and respect from the photographers who stalk her. But does she seriously want the attention to stop? Remember: This is Kim Kardashian we’re talking about.
The first part of her complaint is certainly legit. “Yesterday 4 cars boxed me in,” she writes. “One in front, behind, & one on each side just to have me drive at their speed so they can snap through the window. Its really so scary what they are legally allowed to get away with!” True.
Kim goes on to claim that some photographers threatened her life on Thursday when she refused to let them take a picture. That might sound crazy, but keep in mind that photographing Kim is a multi-million dollar industry; some of these paparazzi might literally depend on her for a steady income. So we can believe that she’d get this kind of threat, however out of line.
And this is where things start to get questionable. “For years I’ve always been so gracious,” Kim writes. “Every shot they take now just isn’t flattering & crazy stories get made up, so why would I willingly just let them stalk me & smile for them?”
Okay, yes, but, this paparazzi thing is a two-way street. All that time that Kim was being “gracious,” she was basking in the attention paid to everything she wore, every party she attended, everyone she dated. Now she wants it to stop because the photographs are unflattering, and being sold to run alongside negative stories. It’s not the paparazzi she’s upset about; it’s that she’s lost control over the narrative.
“I live my life on a reality show for the world to see. I love my life, but when the cameras stop, that doesn’t mean I don’t want a break too,” Kim argues on Twitter. “I’m 32 yrs old now, about to be a mom. I’m not 25 clubbing around LA anymore. There’s no excuse for threats & stalking!”
We sympathize, up to a point. Kim is just trying to get through her last month of pregnancy, and all these a-hole photographers are getting on her last nerve.
But this is the deal with the devil, as it were, that Kim Kardashian made. She presents herself to the world as a person who goes public with her most intimate moments. Those cameras following her around have been trained on her for a long, long time.
Furthermore: If Kim really wants to get away from the paparazzi, she can. Kim’s boyfriend Kanye West is living in Paris, where there are privacy laws in place to protect celebrities and their offspring. (Johnny Depp, Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt are among the stars who have taken refuge in France for that very reason.) Why doesn’t Kim spend the final weeks of her pregnancy in Europe with the father of her child? We know she wants to be close to her family, but surely they would support the move and stay by her side—right? Kanye obviously wants some distance from the Kardashian circus, and would probably be happy if Kim dodged the spotlight for a while.
Really, the question is: Can Kim survive apart from her publicity machine? If a tree falls in the forest and nobody hears it, does it make a sound? If Kim Kardashian gives birth without a camera crew, does it count?
We don’t think that Kim knows how to lead a private life, and we doubt she’s about to start now. However, if she’s serious about getting away from the paparazzi, she’d better hurry up and form a getaway plan—because from the second that little girl is born, those photographers will never stop snapping.
